04 Apr Bernese Mountain Dog Portrait – Blue
Bernese Mountain Dog Blue is a sweet, handsome, mellow boy who was home-bred and named Blue Northern after a winter storm in the western US. At eight and a half years old Blue’s health isn’t as robust as it once was, but this dream of a Bernese still loves to spend his time just chillin’ in the snow.
Blue’s portrait combines watercolour and oil based pencils, using a combination of painting and drawing techniques. The initial sketch and foundation pigment were applied dry using Caran D’Ache and Faber Castell pencils before being blended with a paintbrush and water to form a richly coloured under painting. This helps to add depth to the pet portrait.
Once the under painting is dry I can gradually build up the depth and detail using oil based artists pencils and a blending solution where necessary. I’ve really enjoyed working on this Bernese Mountain Dog Portrait and will be adding Blue to my greeting cards and prints range.
